About

Incoming students of the Masters in Biomedical Informatics (MBI) and Bioinformatics and Integrative Genomics (BIG) PhD program at Harvard Medical School arrive from diverse range of academic backgrounds. Some lack conceptual or practical expertise in quantitative methods that will be needed for their coursework and scientific investigations. The outlined bootcamp intends to provide these students from MBI, BIG, and other PhD programs with focused instruction on key concepts in computer science, statistics, data visualization, as well as general biomedical informatics methods and provide extensive hands-on experience with the relevant software systems.

Implementation

The bootcamp will train students in practical aspects of data analysis challenges encountered in typical graduate level courses and will allow students and instructors to focus on the core content of their courses. Every bootcamp lesson will be developed around a particular topic of broad interest (e.g., using R for data analysis, working in a high-performance computing environment, clustering of gene expression data, visualizing data, etc.) and will cut across the themes of the bootcamp: computer science concepts, core bioinformatics methods, systems, and tools.

The bootcamp will also introduce best practices for reproducible and collaborative work in data-driven environments. As part of the bootcamp the students will also become familiar with the computing environment at Harvard Medical School and additional computational resources that they will be able to access during their time at Harvard Medical School.
